What is the FSC?
The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) started up in 1993 as a result of the Environmental Summit in Rio.
The FSC is a non-governmental, non-profit making organization that supports environmentally-oriented, socially acceptable and economically sustainable use of our earth’s forests. The organisation receives worldwide support from environmental organizations, labour unions, bodies representing endangered cultures, as well as numerous companies involved in forestry and the timber industry.
The FSC is open to everyone who shares an interest in the forests of this earth.

What are the FSC goals?
The FSC’s aim is to contribute to the improvement of forest cultivation internationally. The FSC sees itself as a platform where representatives with varying interests in the forest meet and can find a consensus on a responsible approach to forestry. Arising from this consensus, management standards are developed and mechanisms for the marketing of appropriately manufactured forest products are derived.
The most important instrument in the marketing of related products is the FSC seal on the products.

What is the route from the forest to becoming an FSC product?
FSC standards are set to determine which ecological and social minimum standards must be observed in forestry management. An annual check is carried out on every forest owner by independent monitors (certifiers) to ensure that these standards are adhered to. Only after passing the test can an owner mark wood with the FSC seal and market it accordingly. Further tests during the course of subsequent processing ensure that FSC wood is not mixed with non-certified woods and marked without authorization. In this way the FSC provides a seal by which the consumer can recognize responsible and controlled forestry management.

Chain of Custody (Product Chain Certification)
Products with the FSC seal pass through several stages on their way from the forest to the consumer, and this involves several changes of ownership. This chain, the Chain of Custody (COC), may have different lengths. The key factor is that all owners within the product chain are COC-certified. Product chain certification helps guarantee the consumer that wood products with the FSC seal really come from a certified and responsibly managed forestry enterprise. Important features of the test are evidence of the wood’s origin, plausibility of the quantity, and the guarantee that certified wood is not mixed with non-certified wood. In this way FSC wood can be clearly identified at anytime and at any stage of processing and sale. Source: http://www.fsc-deutschland.de/
